When and Where?

Confirmation Preparation for Teens

What Does the Sacrament of Confirmation Do for Me?

If you have ever bought a new CD player or some other electronic gizmo, you know that it always comes with a “Users Manual.” The manual tells you all about the new equipment and what it can do. More importantly, it tells you how to get the most out of your new purchase.

The Sacrament of Confirmation is not an electronic gadget, and it certainly isn’t new. But you are probably more familiar with CD players and computers than you are with Confirmation - what it is and what it does for you...

On the day of your Confirmation, you are given the seven Gifts of the Holy Spirit (Wisdom, Understanding, Right Judgment, Courage, Knowledge, Reverence and Wonder and Awe in God’s Presence) and are told to use them for the greater glory of God. Well, how do you learn to do that? The Confirmation Program we offer here at Mission Basilica San Juan Capistrano is the “Holy Spirit’s Users Manual.” It shows you how to live out the seven Gifts of the Holy Spirit in your daily life. It will share with you how to get the most out of the Sacrament you will receive.

Our Confirmation Preparation Program is modeled on the “Guidelines for Confirmation,” developed by the Diocese of Orange. It is a two-year program in which doctrine, spiritual formation, works of charity and liturgical celebrations are integrated into a comprehensive process.

Okay, in English please?

Through prayers, retreats, classes, small group discussions, service projects and working with an adult spiritual mentor we call Sponsors, young people will be able to recognize and understand the presence of the Holy Spirit in themselves and in His people, and will be able to identify themselves as active members of the Christian Community.

Our Confirmation Preparation Program is open to all high school youth - even the unbaptized or those who have not yet received their first Holy Communion! (We will make sure they receive those Sacraments too!) The Confirmation Candidate must be in at least 9th grade to begin the Confirmation Preparation Process and the earliest they can be confirmed in the Spirit is in the spring of their 10th grade.

We do have some youth that start the process in the 10th, 11th or even the 12th grade! So if you don’t begin the program as a freshman, there is no reason to freak out! (Well, we are sure there are other reasons to freak out about, like zits and dating - but this is not one of them... So relax!) When you are ready, we will be ready to get you started!
